Day 96

Many people in our society suffer from a sense of separation and isolation from everyone else. This might explain some of our stranger behaviours and apparent indifference to the people around us. But this sense of disconnection is based on an overly defensive attitude, something most of us learn in our early childhood. We learn to be fearful and protective, to look for problems where they don’t exist, to mistrust everyone, including ourselves. This isn’t a healthy way to experience life. This overly defensive behaviour denies us so many opportunities to experience happiness and share in the wonder of other people. We don’t have to abandon our common sense and adopt a careless and naive approach to our fellow human beings but a more positive set of expectations can produce a much more positive level of interaction with others and this makes life so much more pleasant and comfortable for everyone.

Day 107

The world is full of leaders. We have managers, owners, directors, heads of government and an endless array of leaders. What we seem to be lacking are good leaders, people who are capable of introducing positive change into their areas of influence. We seem to resist change, even when it’s for our benefit, but successful leadership often involves change, introducing better ways of running our lives, our responsibilities, even our countries. I want to see more people using their influence to create change for the better at every level of our society, taking better care of ourselves and our environment, focusing on well-being and a happier, more fulfilling existence. Sometimes we have to take the initiative and be the change we seek in the world around us. We need to exercise our ability to influence the people around us and create improvements that benefit everyone. Societies need good leaders. But societies also need people that can influence the world in a wholly positive way at every point of human interaction. Let’s begin by making our individual influence into a force for improvement wherever we may be and turn the world into a better place for everyone.

Day 108

Stress is a recurrent theme for us because it is so widely prevalent in our society. The stress that you retain in your posture every single day absorbs far too much of your energy. No wonder we get tired! The good news is that when you learn to recognise the physical symptoms of stress you can do something positive to correct and release all of your accumulated tension. We often refer to the shoulders as the major indicators for how we feel so we know we have to learn to relax the neck, trapezius and shoulder muscles to achieve an instant reduction in stress levels. Breathing a little more deeply can help to slow our heart rate, reduce high blood pressure, calm us down and disengage from the old, familiar stress responses. Massage can play a major role in helping us to relax, releasing stressed neck, shoulder and back muscles. Drinking enough water and keeping the body hydrated also help to maintain a healthier balance in our bodies. Meditation is the great jewel that can transform our thoughts, our feelings and our stress habits. Learning to recognise the changes in your body that take place when you’re feeling stressed can help you to switch off the tension before it takes root in your posture. So begin by gently relaxing your shoulders and breathing a little more deeply and everything else will seem so much easier.
