Feelings- An Emotional Experience

We are all deeply affected by our emotional energy. Our feelings influence how we relate and connect to other people and some would say that life is essentially an emotional experience. But our health and well-being are often at the mercy of our emotional responses.
It’s time to bring our feelings more closely under our control. It’s time to learn to relax and give up the habit of responding instantly to every situation with a ready-made set of feelings. Pause for a moment. Ask yourself where all these feelings come from. Breathe deeply. Relax your shoulders. Find a calmer state of mind. Now you’re learning how to control your thoughts and your feelings. You are allowing yourself to feel stable, centred, calm and in control. This is the foundation of well-being. You no longer have to react the way you were taught as a small child. Now you have options. Now you can choose better emotional responses and free yourself from your early conditioning forever.

Day 99

The past can cast a long and painful shadow on our lives, especially when we consider how often our feelings and sensitivities have been hurt. But the past is only really perceived by the shifting lens of our emotions and it is not a reliable way to deal with past events. Our emotions colour our experience of the past until the original events become distorted and blurred, unrecognisable and easily pressed into service to justify our egocentric view of the world. Our challenge is to learn to let go of the past. To free ourselves from these stories of what did or did not happen so that we can be free to choose a future that fulfils our dreams and potential. Letting go of the past is a truly liberating experience and an essential step on the pathway to complete well being and the expression of a harmonious and integrated personality.

Day 121

Do some people really make you angry? Do you find that some individuals just seem to bring out the worst in you? If we stop to wonder why these characters produce such a negative reaction, we’ll probably be able to justify our feelings and responses and produce perfect justifications for our righteousness. We are particularly adept and well trained to find perfectly valid reasons for our feelings. But it might be revealing to dig a little deeper, to ask why we really react the way we do. It’s so easy to make moral judgements about others. ‘He’s too selfish’. ‘She doesn’t care.’ ‘They only think about themselves’. The list is endless. But these judgements are more often a reflection of what’s going on in our own hearts. We constantly evaluate, appraise and, unfortunately, judge. The judgements we make are an extension of our how we see ourselves and the world around us. Accept yourself. Let go of the habit of judging everyone. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that people are far less irritating than you expected.

Day 130

We are so much more than the sum of our thoughts and feelings. Most of our emotional reactions were acquired at a very early age and became deeply imprinted in our developing personalities. But it is possible to change these habits, to refine our feelings and dispense with inappropriate behaviours. The first step is to become aware of how you feel. Awareness is a key step in this simple process. Then you step away from the feeling you don’t wish to have. Distancing yourself trains the mind to reflect on how you feel and so we learn to remove the automatic, conditioned responses from our daily patterns of behaviour. As we let go of the negative emotions, we feel a sense of peace as we become calmer and more centred. Then we can perceive the situation around us in a different light. We separate ourselves from the immediacy of our environment and gain a better view without the emotional shading that often distorts our perception. This helps us to maintain objectivity and frees us from the conditioned emotional reflexes that are so often a redundant and inhibiting legacy from our childhoods. Training the mind to follow your will is a much neglected art in our culture but the benefit of neutralising negative thoughts, feelings and behaviour will most certainly transform your life.

Day 134

Our sense of smell is a powerful mechanism for influencing our moods and feelings. What kind of perfumes dominate in your home? Aromatherapy lists an extraordinary range of oils and essences that can be used for almost every human ailment but it can be fun to experiment with different perfumes to determine what effect they have on your emotional state. Finding a soothing, relaxing oil that helps you to release the stresses of the day can be very helpful in calming you down before you go to bed. Stimulating perfumes can help you focus more effectively at work. Some oils will help you to concentrate more fully and assist you with precise, detailed tasks. If you’re interested in influencing the atmosphere at home and would like to promote a feeling of harmony, there are many oils available that could introduce a subtle yet profound sense of wellbeing. The important thing is that you really like the oils you’re working with. Whatever the alleged effects of a particular perfume, it is better to trust your own reaction and note the effects of any perfume you want to introduce into your environment. Our tastes are completely individualistic so we need to make sure that everyone else is also comfortable with your choice of oils. This could open up a whole new world of experience for you and help you to influence your environment in a delightfully positive way.
