Day 86

I’d like to encourage you to develop a much healthier relationship with your body. This is a subject we touch on a regular basis because it’s so important to total well-being. We tend to have the most negative reactions to our bodies and this is potentially harmful to our health, happiness and well-being. So I’d like to remind you to start the day by remembering to smile at yourself in the mirror. It might feel uncomfortable but it helps to establish a more co-operative relationship between your body and your subconscious. Learning to appreciate the miracle of your body, despite what you might feel it looks like, is a fundamental step towards healing, restoring, rejuvenating and strengthening your body. So let’s show some positive appreciation for the home we live in for the entire duration of our lives: our bodies.

Day 120

Happiness is grossly undervalued as a means of transforming our lives. We are taught that happiness depends entirely upon our external circumstances. If we have problems, difficulties and challenges, we can’t possibly be happy. So we postpone all hope of happiness until we reach some distant, mythical point when our problems have gone away and we are free to being enjoying life. Except that life always presents us with problems. That’s the nature of life. Our constant, daily challenge is to learn to separate our feelings from our difficulties and to bring peace into our hearts, to learn to feel a deep sense of happiness that transcends the distractions of our difficulties and find a more powerful state of being. This is not a new idea. This insight has been a vital part of human consciousness for thousands of years. It is not connected to culture or technology. It is an unchanging dynamic of the human condition. Happiness is our true heritage.

Day 163

One of the greatest challenges in our lives is to recognise the limitations imposed by our upbringing. Too often I meet exceptional people who are caged and restricted by their backgrounds, by the rules laid down by their families, by the conditions of their culture and the expectations of the people around them. Life is too short to be lived in the chains of our conditioning. We spend too much of our lives playing the roles laid down by our cultural surroundings. It might not be comfortable to break free of our bonds. It might feel very strange to step beyond the limits of our conditioning. But it seems tragic to spend the gift of our lives in bondage to values and restrictions that have little to do with our deepest potential for happiness, fulfilment and self-expression. These natural, liberating forces that exist within each of us seek positive outlets, harming none, in a quest to bring us closer to who we really are.
