Day 97

Practical advice to help you get in touch with your stronger, more powerful self: relax! As I’ve mentioned on several occasions, we learn to be defensive at a very early age and this habit influences our behaviour for the rest of our lives. The physical effects of this defensive attitude can be seen in our tense shoulder, neck and back muscles, the tension in our chests and the difficulty in breathing deeply. This defensive stress has been called ‘body armouring’ and this description sums up the problem perfectly; we go through life wearing layers of protective armour, physical, mental and emotional defences that create the illusion of being protected.

The challenge for us is to stop, breathe and begin to remove the armour, to peel away the false layers of security that shape our behaviour and discover the power that lies beneath the delusion. It isn’t a comfortable experience to relax our guard for a moment. We naturally feel vulnerable but this is how our fears trap us. Learn to let go. Release the fear and tension. Breathe more deeply and experience the revolution of living beyond the shadows of your fear. It’s the first step towards freedom and a return to a more natural and healthy way of living.

Day 111

People sometimes ask me where I come from, perhaps because my accent doesn’t always give many clues to my origins. But whilst I’m always happy to tell people where I grew up, I’ve always felt that it was more important to focus on where we’re going rather than on where we’ve come from. The future does not have to reflect the past. The future does not have to be an extension of our previous experiences. The future can be completely different. This capacity to create a better future depends on our ability to let go of the past, particularly the more painful aspects of our life. In the moment of letting go, we create space in which we can visualise ourselves in better, healthier, happier circumstances and this vision forms the foundation for changes in our attitudes and behaviour. It’s as if we can re-programme our brains to produce better results and outcomes at every level of our lives. This is a very powerful dynamic of the human condition and I invite you to make use of it every single day. Starting right now.

Day 146

Do you often feel the need to explain yourself? Do you ever find yourself telling others why you do things, justifying your thoughts, feelings and behaviour? This might not be a good habit. If you’re comfortable with whatever you’re doing, how you feel or how you express yourself, you shouldn’t need to explain or justify these things to anyone. The need to explain is often a mechanism for excusing ourselves or for seeking approval from others. The important part is to understand yourself. Then you’re less likely to get lost in the stories we weave to justify our actions. If you’re not comfortable with your behaviour, change it. If you’re not producing the results you want, repeating the same thoughts, feelings or actions will only continue to produce the same outcomes. Explaining yourself to others rarely produces anything worthwhile. Changing how we think, feel and behave is the gift we possess to alter the outcomes of our life.
