The past can cast a long and painful shadow on our lives, especially when we consider how often our feelings and sensitivities have been hurt. But the past is only really perceived by the shifting lens of our emotions and it is not a reliable way to deal with past events. Our emotions colour our experience of the past until the original events become distorted and blurred, unrecognisable and easily pressed into service to justify our egocentric view of the world. Our challenge is to learn to let go of the past. To free ourselves from these stories of what did or did not happen so that we can be free to choose a future that fulfils our dreams and potential. Letting go of the past is a truly liberating experience and an essential step on the pathway to complete well being and the expression of a harmonious and integrated personality.
