I’ve sometimes heard people describe their attitudes and behaviours as inevitable, that their personalities are a product of their backgrounds or upbringing. Sometimes we excuse our attitudes by blaming our parents for being the way we are. But this cannot be so. We possess a powerful tool for change in our species and that is our ability to choose. We can choose what we do, we can choose what we think, we can even choose how we feel. The real issue is to determine if the way you are truly represents how you want to be. Let’s stop blaming others for how we are. Let’s exercise choice, let go of habits and behaviours that degrade our capacity for self expression and practise the art of becoming who we really are. This is a pathway to freedom for ourselves and for those with whom we are most closely connected.
