Awaken – Frees the Mind from Being Overwhelmed

awakenOur senses are overloaded by constant distractions. Becoming more aware frees the mind from the habit of being overwhelmed. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed for a few minutes. Sit comfortably, close your eyes and listen. Just listen. Become aware of all the sounds around you, some near, some further away. Breathe gently and notice the sounds. Most of the time we’re so pre-occupied that we miss most of what’s going on around us. Take a minute to slow down and begin to take notice of the sounds.
This is an ancient technique for helping us to feel centred and grounded, to feel a calming sense of detachment from the world around us. We begin this process by focusing our attention through the senses. This subtle shift in perception changes the way we perceive the world. This can produce some very pleasant surprises but its main function is to shift our habitual immersion in the distractions around us to a more focused yet detached overview of our environment.
